Barely several centimeters below modern debris, Dr. Eilat Mazer made made what he referred to as a “once in a lifetime” discovery. Mazer unearthed a hoard of gold and silver treasure, which included gold coins, gold and silver jewelry, and a gold medallion engraved with the menorah symbol.
The fascinating discovery was made during a summer excavation, conducted not far from the Temple Mount, Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Dr. Mazer was conducting Ophel excavations when he came across the treasure, which can be dated back to the Persian conquest of Jerusalem in 614 A.D. Mazer believes that the gold and silver items were hidden and never retrieved.
An exclusive video offers a glimpse at the ancient treasure, while also explaining how the finding was discovered and processed.
